Aren't Cavities Normal?

Posted on 3/3/2025 by Lone Pine Dental
Cavity diagram. It might surprise you to hear that cavities aren't a normal part of having teeth, even though many adults have experienced them. While it's true that cavities are incredibly common, that doesn't mean they're unavoidable. With proper oral care and preventive dentistry, cavities are entirely preventable. Let's dive deeper into why cavities happen and what steps we can take to avoid them.

Understanding Cavities: A Deeper Look

A cavity, also known as a dental caries, is damage to the hard tissues of your teeth. This damage is caused by a complex interplay of factors, primarily bacteria in the mouth that feed on sugars and produce acid as a byproduct. This acid gradually erodes tooth enamel, the hard outer layer protecting our teeth, eventually creating a cavity, a hole in the tooth.

What Happens if You Ignore Cavities?

Ignoring cavities isn't a wise choice. As they progress, the damage extends beyond enamel, reaching deeper layers, including dentin and pulp. This leads to increased pain and sensitivity, eventually requiring more complex and costly procedures like root canals and crowns to save the tooth. In extreme cases, a neglected cavity can even lead to tooth loss.

Prevention: Keeping Cavities at Bay

Fortunately, we don't have to accept cavities as inevitable. With a proactive approach and consistent dental care, we can keep them at bay:

•  Brushing: Brush your teeth twice daily for 2 minutes each session using fluoride toothpaste. Choose soft-bristled brushes and use gentle circular motions.
•  Flossing: Daily flossing removes plaque and debris that brushing cannot reach, especially between the teeth, where cavities often form. Consider flossing tools if traditional floss feels cumbersome.
•  Dental Checkups and Cleanings: Schedule dental checkups and cleanings twice per year. During these visits, your dentist can examine your mouth, diagnose problems like cavities in their early stages, and provide professional cleanings to remove harmful plaque buildup.
•  Diet: Limit sugary foods and drinks, as these contribute to the acid that erodes enamel. Opt for water instead, and choose healthier snacks like fruits and vegetables.

By adopting a consistent oral health routine and regularly consulting with a dentist for preventive measures, cavities don't have to be a normal part of your dental journey. Embrace healthy habits, and enjoy the confidence and comfort that come with cavity-free smiles!
